European Heart Network Statement on Front of Pack Nutrition Labelling

03 Feb 2020

In September 2017 the European Heart Network (EHN) published Transforming European food and drink policies for cardiovascular health in which EHN recommended for the EU to adopt mandatory EU-wide simplified front-of-pack nutritional labelling. EHN specifically recommended a scheme which uses traffic light colours to indicate high, medium and low levels of fat, saturated fat, salt and (preferably added) sugar.

EHN added that it would follow developments in evidence for the most effective front of pack nutrition labelling (FOPNL) scheme.

Since September 2017, several studies on FOPNL have been published. EHN is convening a working group to examine these studies as well as the role of national front-of-pack symbols. Following the review by the working group EHN will consult with its members as to the best way forward for FOPNL in Europe.
