The European Heart Network (EHN) has contributed to the European Commission’s public consultation on the proposed Council Recommendation on cardiovascular health checks.
In its response, EHN welcomes the initiative’s ambition to strengthen prevention, early detection and equitable access to cardiovascular care across Europe through evidence-based, population-level screening approaches. EHN highlights the importance of early and systematic detection of cardiovascular and cardiometabolic risk factors to help reduce cardiovascular events, premature mortality and health inequalities.
As a member of the ESC-led multi-stakeholder Task Force on defining a cardiovascular-renal-metabolic health check, EHN endorses the proposed structured approach outlined in the Task Force document, which includes risk factor assessment and integration with existing healthcare contacts. EHN also stresses the importance of meaningful follow-up and continuity of care, including access to prevention services, behavioural interventions and long-term management pathways.
In addition, EHN highlights the need for flexible implementation adapted to national healthcare systems and resources, while ensuring that health checks remain accessible, free of charge and supported by clear and culturally sensitive communication.
EHN stands ready to contribute to future implementation and monitoring efforts, including developing tools to monitor uptake across Member States.
